Hopped in Red at half past three. The action started directly at
Fireside for the afternoon. I joined Angie, Billy, & Jen there. Carrie
showed up a bit later, as did Ethan. We had a lively time around one
of the tables there. A taco wagon showed up, and we all looked forward
to eating some of the food it had to offer. I tried some, but it cost
me some time sitting on porcelain later on. We covered quite a few
topics, some of them quite a few times. It started to rain a little,
but we were protected from that as we were sitting under an awning. On
my way out of the place an older woman pulled me aside to complain
that she had overheard much of our conversation, and wondered whether
or not we need to say "fuck" as much as we do, back in her day
apparently people weren't as wanton with language. In an effort to be
polite I explained that "It's just part of the language I learned."
(as I won't speak for others in most cases) and she seemed a bit taken
aback, but said "okay". I left and went downtown.
It started raining harder, and I wasn't feeling much like being packed
into Boise Fry Company, where there was a pretty good free show going
on, so I left from downtown despite my fantastic parking space.
Not wanting to go home, I had the bright idea of driving west on
Overland to check out the All About Games store there, but got
distracted by the Reel Theater, where I stopped and caught a late
showing of "Aquaman". It was pretty good.
Went home and made ready for the morrow.

This entry reflects Thursday the 21st.
Bailed from the house in Red around four o'clock. Went and parked at
the mall again as that seems to be the easiest way to do things. Rode
the same bus line from there, thinking I was going to head downtown,
but my route was interrupted by a text from Dr. Coble saying she was
over at the Symposium Lounge off of Fairview with her friend Ursula
and I could meet them there for some drinks. Thanks to the power of
portable Internet on the bus I was able to workout what the route and
timing would be like in order to get over there, so I followed those
indicators. They involved a bit of walking, which I don't mind one
bit. Hopped off on Fairview west bound near Fairly Reliable Bob's, and
made my way toward the Sympo.
Once I arrived there, I climbed some stairs near an open door and
poked my head in, turns out that was the back entrance, not for us
regular folks. So, I walked around front where I see each of the women
I was expecting to meet getting into their cars getting ready to
leave! Lucky I had spotted them, Coble had forgotten she invited me
down, because she was too busy being super nice. Ms. Weightman was
having a car trouble, and Angie had offered to get it taken care of
that day, because she could. I hope you all have friends who will help
you out when they can!
Hopped in with her, we dropped the car at a tire shop which seems to
be under remodel, and went over to the Fireside to meet friends since
the neurolux is more or less off the table for the remainder of the
festival.
The Fireside is an interesting place. They are making a concerted
effort to move away from their old image as a rough place on the
outskirts of Drinking Central and trying to become more of a
neighborhood bar. They have a really nice patio now, and that's where
we planted ourselves. It's very different from Al's Corral out
there. It's spacious, the tables are round and large, the chairs move
around and are comfortable, and so it's overall pleasant. The downside
is that the people watching isn't as good, it's also not as likely
you'll catch up with someone who is just passing by since it's not
right downtown.
We had a lot of fun, and many great laughs there, so much so that my
face hurt from smiling after a while, especially after J. Mooney
showed up with a roaring drunk on in a glorious mood! He's a hoot and
a half and it's not super easy to parse his Cork accent, but still
pretty fun. He did talk over Ursula in the midst of a tale she was
sharing about how school officials sometimes get a little overzealous,
but that's just how the bar goes sometimes. I find Ursula utterly charming,
we have some really neat folk in our town.
The Fireside action wound down, and so it became time to head downtown
to check the scene there for Treefort Festivities. Alas, that day I
wasn't struck by the action after I had walked around for a bit. I did
stop in to Rediscovered Books looking for new ways to spend my
upcoming tax return, and found them in spades! Alastair Reynolds has a
sequel to "Revenger" out, and Peter F. Hamilton has a new tome out
reflecting the goings on in yet another universe he has created. I am
looking forward to reading each of those.
Caught a bus back up to where I parked Red, drove over to Phoenix Fire
Games in Meridian. Chatted with Joe for a while, and then went
home. Listened to some comedy and then slept very well.

Freefortin' Day 1.
15:00ish
I left the house in the Big Red Pick-Up Truck and drove over
to the Boise Town Square Mall. The parking there is free, and there
are a few bus lines which go directly downtown from there. Made it
just in time to catch the #5 line. A really cool thing about the ride
is that when I pulled in, I noticed our friend Robbie (Majin) sitting
there getting ready to head in as well. He and I hopped on the bus,
grabbed seats near each other and gabbed about the festival, music,
the Boise scene politics, and a few other things. He'll be rockin'
over at the Shredder for much of the festival. I know it's a little
off the beaten path, but still, check for shows over there, some are
going to be pretty cool.
Listened to some Digitalism through the 'phones after Robbie
hopped off. Digitalism is p h r e s h fresh! Later in the evening
I listened to a bunch of Ennio Morricone. I don't want to live in
a world where I don't get to listen to Ennio Morricone.
Currently listening to Todd Terje.
Also on the bus ride were quite a few mid-teens who were pretty
excited about going downtown to make the scene. A couple of them were
packin' folded up Razor style scooters for getting around. And
push-scootin' is the way to get around indeed! Those electric rentals
are a very popular choice with the Treefort crowd it seems.
Hopped off at the downtown underground. That's a pretty neat facility
for our transit system! Walked across the way to All About Games to
look into some dice since I may start playing in one of the weekly
games at a game store. I don't know how AAG stays in business in that
lush downtown location, but it's been working for them for quite a
while now, so good for them!
Clapped the cans back over my ears and had a meander over to Grove
Street near the Main Stage hoping for some eats, but alas, I didn't
spot any. Experiencing disappointment I created through an unfounded
expectation (that they would be out already) I wandered over to
neurolux (they don't capitalize it on the sign or their website) to
figure it out from there.
Of course upon arrival at the bar I ran immediately into some friends!
Chatted with Cheyne for a while, and we then spotted Dr. Coble and
stepped her way to catch the news. Angie introduced me to one of her
friends, she and I had a nice discussion about how neat life is
despite how difficult it can be at times. Kicked it at neurolux a bit
longer, which was pretty cool because I also got to see Russell, Liz,
Tobias, and Nastasia (forgive my spelling, I've only ever heard her
name, not seen it in print). The latter had an unpleasant experience
earlier in the day where someone made a racially-biased comment. Maybe
he didn't mean to, but what came out was inappropriate
nonetheless. Part of my lifestyle is not having that
experience. REMINDER: If you're born with privilege, check it
sometimes.
Remembering that Russell said he was going for food, I stalked him
down at Atlas Bar and asked if I could join him. We rolled over to
Matador and enjoyed some comida Mexicana nouveaux. The chips there
aren't great, white and dull in flavor, but the salsa is pretty damn
good. I had a habenero steak burrito (vegetarianism is on the list,
still kinda new on being compassionate enough to myself to be
sober). It was super yummy! The slaw they serve on the side is
refreshing, crunchy, and delightful. I will in the future be careful
to not shell out $3.5 for a 10oz horchata. Matador was quite warm
inside, and the space is beautiful. The iron work is pretty neat.
Oh, yeah! The neurolux serves a diet cola Roy Rogers if you ask nicely!
Bussed back up to TSM to grab Red before the lines stopped running
shortly after R. and I stopped by Barbarian to say hello to his
brother. Both of those fellas are really nice, I'm glad I know them.
I was able to enjoy some of the Treefort music which was coming from neurolux
courtesy of Mr. Grant Olsen and the Radio Boise KRBX remote
crew while driving. That's very cool! Sixteen year old me would not have guessed
that stuff like that would happen here. Had a couple of refreshing
near-beers down at Tenth Street Station while I worked on notes for
this, and caught up with a couple of friends there as well.
I love you folks, and I love this town!

Hello!
Welcome to Fort Darrin, a blog about my experiences with Treefort
2019.
This year, I don't have the scratch for the fancy wristband, but I
will be out and about enjoying food, folks, and fun! This blog is
going to document that experience. It may have some photos as well,
but that's gonna take a bit of doing as I lost my cameras to poor
decision making some time back.
My goal is to update this set of documents multiple times throughout
the day, so feel free to check back often. I won't be running ads, so
if you enjoy the content at all, buy me a taco or coffee (if you would
like to) when you see me around.
One thing I will be endeavoring to do this year is have a power strip
with me at all times. So if you find that you need a boost and know of
a generator with an open port, be in touch, we can hang for a bit.
That's all for now. See you after the sun's up.
Happy Treefort Everybody!
